Porto’s Luis Diaz netted the victory in a deserved 1-0 Group B win at the Estadio do Dragao on Tuesday, keeping their Champions League chances alive but dealing AC Milan a major blow.

Porto were rewarded for their domination in a game in which they squandered a lot of chances and scarcely gave Milan a sniff at the other end. Diaz, who had earlier struck the post, scored midway through the second half.

Milan may have been correct in believing there was a foul in the build-up to the goal, but neither German referee Felix Brych nor the video assistant concurred.

Porto are in third place in the pool, with four points from three games, behind Atletico Madrid on goal differential and Liverpool, who are in first place (nine). Milan has lost all three matches and is yet to break their duck.

In the first half, there were few opportunities, but the best fell to the hosts, particularly Iran international Mehdi Taremi, who was wasteful on the night.

Diaz came the closest to scoring, but his wonderful run and low drive from the edge of the area hit the post and bounced back.

When Taremi sliced a shot wide from 12 yards and then saw a header flash the wrong side of the post, he should have scored.

At the other end of the field, Milan striker Olivier Giroud chose to head across goal in search of a teammate when he should have been more selfish at the back post in what was the visitors’ finest chance of the game.

Early in the second period, Taremi’s effort went inches wide as Porto continued to seem the more likely to score, and they were rewarded on 65 minutes, albeit in questionable circumstances.

As both players tried for a high pass, Taremi seemed to collide with Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer. The ball eventually fell to Diaz on the edge of the box, who struck low into the net.
