In Rubirizi, two youngsters drown in abandoned mines.

Children regularly travel to the marshes around the abandoned mines to harvest papyrus for crafts and swim, according to Mushabe.

In the Rubirizi district, two youngsters drowned in abandoned mines. Agnes Tumukunde, 15, and Gift Kyoshabire, 14, are both Nyakaramibi Primary School students and residents of Rutondo cell in Kyabakara sub county.

On Sunday, the two toddlers drowned while collecting papyrus for crafts. James Mushabe, the Rutondo cell’s LC 1 chairperson, claims that they heard screaming from a girl named Nabaasa who had survived drowning.

He claims that the other two children had already dead by the time they arrived at the mines. Children regularly travel to the marshes around the abandoned mines to harvest papyrus for crafts and swim, according to Mushabe.

Chinese gold prospectors in the area, according to Elisa Tumwesigye, the LC III chairwoman of Kyabakara sub-county, left the mines open. He claims that when it rains heavily, the abandoned mines near the Buhindagyi stream fill up with water.

Harriet Nakamya, the Resident Commissioner of Rubirizi District, claims drownings are regular in the district. She claims that both young and old individuals have drowned while gathering water or swimming in crater lakes.

She claims that six individuals have died as a result of drowning so far. The Greater Bushenyi Region Police Spokesperson, Martial Tumusiime, reports that investigations have begun. He claims that following a postmortem, the bodies of the deceased were given over to their parents.
