Following the CAF interclub drawings for the group stages of the Champions League and Confederation Cup 2022/23 season, the heated and recent rivalry between South African powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns and Egyptian giants Al Ahly has been resurrected. On December 12, 2022, a Monday, the drawings were held.
The group of death will be Group B, which boasts Al Ahly (Egypt), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), El Hilal (Sudan), and Coton Sport and promises to put on a fine display (Cameroon).
Wydad Casablanca, the reigning champion, is in group A. Atlético Petróleos de Luanda will be the opponent for the Moroccans (Angola). The following matchup pits them against Algeria’s JS Kabylie in a North African rivalry. AS Vita Club of Congo is the group’s final member.
Esperance of Tunis, Zamalek (Egypt), CR Belouizdad (Algeria), and Al Merreikh caused a stir in group D for CAF (Sudan).
The CAF Confederation Cup does not spare some famous names. This is something that TP Mazembe can speak to because the Congolese team, who was kicked out of the Champions League, is in a group alongside AS Real Bamako, US Monastir, and Young Africans that can prove challenging (Mali). Asec Mimosas, another team that was eliminated from the Champions League, will play in group B with the Nigerian team Rivers United, the Congolese team Diables Noirs from Brazzaville, and the Congolese team DCMP from Kinshasa. Pyramids FC and Future FC, two Egyptian teams, are notable additions to Group C. They will be in the company of Moroccans.
Regarding the calendar of this CAF Cup, the first day begins on February 12 and ends on April 2.
