2022 FIFA World Cup: Uruguay sees off Ghana in supposed ‘revenge mission’ tie

The journey of Ghana to the 2022 FIFA World Cup has come to an end after a Friday afternoon loss to Uruguay at the Al Janoub Sports Stadium by a score of two goals.

The Black Stars, who were in the tournament for the second time after losing to the South American team on penalties in 2010, failed to capitalize on their opportunity in what was dubbed as a revenge mission for them.

Alidu Seidu and Baba Rahman replaced Gideon Mensah and Tariq Lamptey in the team that overcame South Korea in their second group game, according to coach Otto Addo.

When Mohammed Kudus was pulled down in the penalty area in the 21st minute, the West African team had the opportunity to move forward.

The team’s captain, Andre Ayew, had his left-footed penalty kick stopped by a Uruguayan goalkeeper.

De Arrascaeta scored for Uruguay in the next minutes as a result of increased pressure put on them by Uruguay after Ghana missed a penalty.

Lawrence Ati Zigi stopped Luiz Suarez’s shot, but De Arrascaeta was there to score Diego Alonso’s team’s winning goal.

In the 32nd minute, De Arrascaeta extended Uruguay’s advantage by utilizing an assist from Luiz Suarez to shoot past Lawrence Ati-Zigi in goal for Ghana.

Otto Addo’s team made several goal attempts in an effort to improve their reputation, but all of their efforts were in vain as the South Americans won 2-0 in the opening period.

When Otto Addo returned from break, he made two quick substitutions for the Ayew brothers, Andre and Jordan, by introducing Osman Bukari and Kamaldeen Sulemana.

The day’s saving grace was Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, who saved many attempts by Mohammed Kudus that could have resulted in goals for the Ajax midfielder.

Later, the former African champions brought on Daniel Kofi Kyere, Antoine Semenyo, and Abdul Fataw Ishahaku in an attempt to salvage a point, but they were unable to get through the Uruguayan defense.

As a result of South Korea finishing second after defeating Portugal in the final seconds of the match, both teams will miss the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
