Double In a cryptic Twitter tweet sent to Fernando Alonso’s 2.8 million followers on Wednesday, the Formula One world champion hinted at an impending ‘great news’ announcement.

“BTV vras nduvrg ddwa ddwa ddwa ddwa ddwa ddwa Eno iw giadt gby awa, Q’z xwptbvrg ewqf mn ndlr!!!!,” the Spaniard wrote ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps this weekend.

Online sleuths soon decrypted the apparent gibberish using the Vigenere cypher, a method of encrypting alphabetic text, with the key phrase ‘Alpine’ as the key word.

“BIG news coming soon,” the decrypted tweet read. I’m also tweeting this in code to tease you all!!!!”

Esteban Ocon, Alonso’s French teammate who won the penultimate race before the August break in Hungary, joined in the celebrations.

“I mtb lsu pkmecoyt evpl hdzx sue lpnx yzj’zr enydcagiyv agvatvpg ewln,” he responded.

“Lpi’a fie, wtb’f wep,” Alonso said in response. Vwg 24 lofga gs wzgs vx ofi! Iprc’vp vwg 24 lofga gs wzgs vx ofi! (Let’s take a look, let’s have a look.) They have 24 hours to figure it out!)

Alonso, 40, is anticipated to stay with Alpine next season after returning to Formula One in 2021 after a two-year absence.

Last month, Alpine head Laurent Rossi confirmed that the Spaniard’s current contract was a ‘one plus one’ – 2021 plus a 2022 option the club can exercise – and that he would be staying.

“He’s as quick as he’s ever been.” Rossi told the BBC that he is “definitely getting the most out of the automobile.”

“The car isn’t particularly quick, but he still manages to turn some scorching laps and qualify the car well.” So far, everything has gone well.”
