On July 21 and 22, 2022, the Arusha International Conference Centre in Tanzania will host the EAC Heads of State Retreat on the EAC Common Market and the 22nd Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State.

Both the High Level Retreat and the 22nd Summit are anticipated to draw about 300 attendees from Partner States, the commercial sector, civil society, and development partners.

The Heads of State are expected to, among other things, take stock of the implementation of the EAC Common Market Protocol during their High Level Retreat on the Common Market, adopt strategic measures to remove bottlenecks and delays in the creation of the Common Market, agree on a roadmap for the full realization of the Common Market, and identify key areas where development partners can help the Common Market become a reality.

The 42.4 km Arusha Bypass Road is scheduled to be opened by the Heads of State on Friday, July 22, 2022, early in the morning.

A total of US$173.86 million was co-funded for the bypass by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Africa Trade Fund, the governments of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Republic of Kenya.
