Developed countries responsible for vast majority of greenhouse gas emissions through history: UN chief

During his tour to the flood-affected regions of Pakistan, the secretary-general made the comments during a press conference in Karachi, a port city in the country's south.

The majority of greenhouse gas emissions to the environment over the course of human history have been caused by industrialized economies, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who made this statement on Saturday.

During his tour to the flood-affected regions of Pakistan, the secretary-general made the comments during a press conference in Karachi, a port city in the country’s south.

He said that “those living in high climatic sensitivity situations, notably in South Asia, are 15 times more likely to die from climate impacts.” “Those impacts are soaring,” he stated.

According to Guterres, about half of humanity currently falls into this group, with the majority living in developing nations.

In the wake of the flood-disaster, Pakistan has been suffering, the secretary-general called upon the international community to establish a new method of debt relief for the affected countries.

He also supported a debt exchange mechanism that would allow nations to invest in infrastructure that is sustainable, resilient to climate change, and greening their economy rather than paying off debt to creditors.

In a previous press conference on Friday, in response to Xinhua’s report on centuries of carbon emissions by rich nations, Guterres called for the developed world to effectively support the most vulnerable developing nations so they can build resilience and adapt to the situation.

“Generosity is not the issue here. Justice is at stake here, he declared.

The secretary-general toured the flood-affected areas of Pakistan’s southern Sindh and southwest Balochistan provinces on Saturday together with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and other authorities.

Apart from visiting the UNESCO’s World Heritage site of Mohenjo Daro in Sindh, which got damaged from the floods, he also met the displaced people in Sindh and Balochistan.

The secretary-general also took a comprehensive aerial look at the flood situation and damages.
