Prioritize Issues of National Interest- Todwong tells Youth Leaders

Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and current Chairperson of the Interparty Organization for Dialogue (IPOD) council, has advised youthful leaders to address problems of national concern that touch common people.

He made the statements during a meeting with youth leaders from political parties affiliated with the NRM’s Interparty Youth Platform (IYOP) at the NRM headquarters on Plot 10, Kyadondo Road, Nakasero. Among the parties were the NRM, FDC, DP, UPC, JEEMA, ANT, and PPP.

“The colours of our clothes and varied shades of opinion shouldn’t mislead us from the plight of the regular people. Instead, political parties should be the greatest outlets for addressing these issues,” Todwong said on Friday.

He emphasized the importance of conversation and consensus among elites in addressing some of society’s key concerns, such as high youth unemployment and poverty. “Once the aforementioned issues are resolved, the socioeconomic transition will be realized,” SG stated.

Rt.Hon. Todwong also praised the platform for unifying and nurturing individuals he regarded as future leaders, saying that “this is the ideal forum for democracy to develop and practice freedom of association.”

The IYOP leaders addressed their concerns to Todwong in the form of a memorandum, which was handled by the Forum for Democratic Change’s group chair, Ms Mutesi Zalika (FDC).

Some of the challenges raised in the document that demand the attention of both IPOD and the government include the high cost of elections, a lack of youth engagement in leadership institutions, and pre and post-election violence that disproportionately impacts young people.

Mr Gadafi Nasur, Chairperson of the NRM Youth League, requested that Mr Todwong, Chairperson of the IPOD, table their issues and engage with colleague leaders to address them.

IYOP is a platform that brings together different youth leagues of all active political parties in Uganda.
