Frank Baine, a spokesman for the Uganda Prisons Service, has disputed that MPs Mohammed Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana were tortured while in custody.

When Kawempe North MP Ssegirinya went before Buganda Road Court Grade last week, he showed the court what seemed to be rotting feet, as well as wounds he said were the consequence of constant torture while in prison.

Baine, however, rejected the allegations on NBS TV’s Morning Breeze on Wednesday, claiming that the legislator was already sick when he was turned over to them.

“Torturing our family members has never been in our best interests.” “Yes, Hon. Ssegirinya is sick, and we’re treating him for as long as he’s with us,” Baine said. “Many times, we receive these detainees from court when they’re already sick.”

They do not torture people, according to Baine, because they are prisons.

“We encourage people who have been tortured to inform us when and by whom they were abused. “That’s how we’ll be able to follow up,” Baine explained.

President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu of the National Unity Platform paid a visit to the arrested MPs earlier this week with a group of NUP delegates and family members.

After the visit, Kyagulanyi informed journalists that Ssegirinya is in pain and that he believes he requires more medical attention.

Allan Ssewanyana, a Makindye West legislator, was also in pain and claimed to have been tortured, according to Kyagulanyi.

According to Baine, these are unfounded assertions.

“We wear our names on our chests in prison.” Anyone who claims to have been tortured should tell us who tortured them, according to Baine.

Erias Lukwago, Kampala Lord Mayor and defense lawyer for both Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana, said Baine is being “dishonest” because he knows the facts as well.

“I’d like to make a broad remark. People are tortured in all government detention centers, whether they are gazetted or not, and you (Baine) are being cautious. “That is the height of dishonesty,” Lukwago remarked.
