Veteran Brazil defender Alves, Sao Paulo split over unpaid wage row

Dani Alves has left Brazilian club Sao Paulo after the veteran defender boycotted training on Friday in protest of unpaid wages.
“We have made the decision and notified (manager) Hernan Crespo that Daniel Alves will no longer be a member of the club,” the team’s sporting director Carlos Belmonte said on Twitter.
He emphasized, “Sao Paulo is bigger than one individual.”
Belmonte revealed that the former Barcelona, Juventus, and PSG player’s advisers informed the club that his training boycott would continue until his overdue wage was paid.
According to local press sources, Alves, 38, owes 11 million reais (almost €1.8 million).
According to Belmonte, Sao Paulo recognizes the obligation and made an offer last week, which was rejected.
When Alves traveled for the Olympic Games, where he won his 43rd gold medal, relations between the team and Alves deteriorated.
In 2019, the most decorated footballer in history signed a three-year contract with Sao Paulo.
