Venus Williams will miss the 2019 US Open owing to injury, making her the third US female after Serena Williams and Sofia Kenin to withdraw from the year’s last Grand Slam tournament on Wednesday.

Venus, who has seven Grand Slam wins to her career, expressed her disappointment at not being able to compete in her “favorite slam” and wished the other players well.
Serena Williams, the younger sister, withdrew from the US Open due to a torn hamstring earlier in the day, marking the first time since 2003 that neither sister has competed in the tournament at Flushing Meadows.
The brothers join a long list of injured players, including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Simona Halep, who will miss the tournament.
With a breakthrough Covid-19 infection, fifth seed and 2020 Australian Open champion Kenin withdrew from the competition.

“I tested positive for Covid-19 recently. Because I’ve been vaccinated, my symptoms have been relatively minor. However, because I continue to test positive, I will be unable to compete in the US Open next week.
“I’m going to spend the next several weeks getting healthy and getting ready to play well in fall,” he says. Thank you for your continued support. I’d want to wish all of the guys well in New York.”
Along with Jennifer Brady, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Danielle Collins, the 22-year-old Kenin, also known as Sonya, is part of an exceptional crop of young Americans in the game.
The main draw matches at the US Open begin on Monday.
