Respected Canon Bishop of the Diocese of Namirembe Elected Moses Banja

On November 20, 2023, in St. Stephen's Cathedral Naluwerere in East Busoga Diocese, the House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda elected Ven. Canon Moses Banja as the sixth bishop of Namirembe Diocese.

The date of his consecration and enthronement is December 10, 2023, in St. Paul’s Cathedral in Namirembe. He takes over for Rt Rev Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira, who will reach the obligatory retirement age of 64 on December 8 and retire.

Born in Nakabugo Bbira, Busiro on October 20, 1964, Ven Canon Moses Banja is a Busiro native. On December 3, 1989, he confessed his faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior. 1996 saw his ordination, and 1998 saw his priesthood.

God has blessed him and Rev. Canon Prof. Olivia Nassaka Banja with three children.

Ven. Moses Banja is a graduate of Makerere University with a postgraduate diploma in education and a bachelor’s degree in divinity.

At now, he serves as the Archdeacon of Namirembe Diocese’s Luzira Archdeaconry.

The candidacy of Ven Canon Banja and Rev. Abraham Muyinda, the Vicar of Namirembe Cathedral, who had emerged as the best candidates from the list of 13, was the subject of an examination by the nominations committee, which postponed the elections for the next Namirembe Bishop.

As a result, the committee sent the House of Bishops’ conclusions, and the bishops chose Ven Canon Moses Banja.

As a result, he will succeed Rt Rev Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira, who will retire on December 8 after reaching the required age of 64, and become the sixth Bishop of the Namirembe Diocese.

Luwalira will have held the position of Bishop of Namirembe Diocese for 14 years by the time he retires.
