Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), died on Friday, according to the Ministry of Presidential Affairs.
The ministry also stated that the UAE will observe 40 days of formal mourning, with flags flying at half-mast across the country, and that all UAE ministries, both federal and municipal, as well as the commercial sector, will be closed for three days starting on Friday.
The cause of death has not yet been determined. In a statement issued in Arabic by the state news agency WAM, the ministry extended its condolences to the people of the UAE and Arab countries “on the passing of the nation’s leader and protector of its path, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the country’s president.”
