Volker Turk, the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, wrote an open letter to Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Saturday, urging him to “guarantee that human rights are central to the management of Twitter.”

The letter came after news of Friday’s widespread layoffs at Twitter, which also affected its human rights unit and ethical AI team.

Turk wrote in the letter that the guidelines for the platform’s use and development should be based on respect for our common human rights.

The UN Human Rights Chief encouraged Twitter to defend the right to privacy in the letter and emphasized that Twitter has a duty to refrain from spreading anything that violates others’ rights.

In October, Elon Musk successfully closed a deal to acquire Twitter for 44 billion dollars, taking ownership of the social network company. As part of a bold cost-cutting strategy, Twitter reportedly let off thousands of staff on Friday across all corporate divisions.
