Uhuru Kenyatta will not attend AU peace negotiations with Ethiopia
Uhuru Kenyatta, a former president, will not attend the Ethiopian war peace negotiations scheduled to take place in South Africa on Saturday, October 8, 2022.
The former president of Kenya cited prior obligations.
The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), a rebel organization, and the Ethiopian government are anticipated to undertake peace negotiations in an effort to end the ongoing conflict.
Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president of Nigeria, will serve as the Special Representative of the African Union for the Horn of Africa in charge of the peace negotiations.
Kenyatta was invited by Moussa Faki Mahamat, the chairperson of the African Union Commission, who is also President William Ruto’s peace envoy to the Horn and Great Lakes region.
He was meant to be a member of a “troika of negotiators” that assisted the warring sides in formulating the conditions of their negotiations.
He questioned the mediation’s organizational structure and offered his assistance at a later time in a diplomatic letter to the AU.
Kenyatta wrote: “However, in the interim and while you contemplate the possibility of another date for the peace talks, I would be delighted to hear further clarification on the structure and modalities of the meetings, including but not limited to the rules of engagement for all the interlocutors invited.
“This clarity will considerably aid in my engagement and participation preparations,” he continued.
