The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, H.E. Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, met with Uhuru Kenyatta, former President of Kenya and Facilitator for the Nairobi Peace Process and security in Eastern DRC appointed by the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State.

The facilitator discussed with President Tshisekedi the preparations for the conference in Nairobi that will bring together, in the second half of this month, the Congolese State and the armed groups that have agreed to lay down their arms in order to begin discussion with Kinshasa.

The EAC Secretary General, the Honorable (Dr.) Peter Mathuki, and other close colleagues of President Tshisekedi attended the Sunday meeting.

Mathuki joined other DRC government officials in greeting Kenyatta at Kinshasa’s Aeroport International De N’djili.

After the meeting, Kenyatta traveled to the headquarters of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) for in-depth discussions with the Representatives of the Ituri and Kivu provinces.

The inter-Congolese conversation under the EAC-led peace process has been revitalized to include all Community leaders and stakeholders in order to provide an all-encompassing solution to the fragile security situation.

This conference takes place one week after the Summit of EAC Heads of State held a High-Level Consultative Meeting on the peace process in Eastern DRC in Shamar El Sheikh, Egypt, on the fringes of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change meeting (COP-27).

The African Union and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) are currently contributing to the EAC Special Fund for the execution of the peace process.

The EAC is scheduled to conduct a Peace Summit by the end of the year, with one of the agenda issues being the potential harmonization of the EAC-led peace process and the Luanda Process, which have reinforcing mandates and complementary functions.

The next session of the discussion will likewise begin on November 21, 2022, in Nairobi, Kenya.
