Uganda has been praised by the UN Refugee Agency for hosting Afghan nationals.

Uganda opted to open its doors to Afghan nationals in their hour of need, according to the UN refugee agency.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) praised Uganda on Wednesday for enabling Afghan refugees to stay in the country.

“Uganda has a long history of accepting refugees, and this is yet another tremendous show of solidarity with people whose lives and freedom are threatened at home,” according to the UNHCR.
On Wednesday, Uganda stated that it had accepted 51 Afghan evacuees. This is the first group of 2,000 evacuees who will be welcomed in the country.

According to UNHCR data, Uganda has the biggest number of refugees in Africa, with over 1.45 million, predominantly from South Sudan but also from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi.
