UCC ISSUES IMMEDIATE BAN ON VULGAR AND OBSCENE CONTENT ACROSS ALL MEDIA PLATFORMS – FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN SEVERE PENALTIES

By Aggrey Baba

When a stone is thrown into a calm river, it disturbs the waters, leaving ripples that reach far and wide. So too, does the airing of vulgar and obscene content across Uganda’s media platforms stir up a storm. The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has spoken, and their words are as clear as daylight.

“Enough is enough!” Like the wise saying goes, “A child who does not listen to the elders will be burnt by fire.” The UCC’s directive, issued on Thursida, December 12, 2024, aims to extinguish the growing flames of moral decay, setting a firm boundary to protect the cultural and moral values of the nation.

In a bold move, the UCC has ordered all broadcasters, whether on television, radio, or online, to immediately halt the promotion and airing of certain songs deemed to be filled with a dirty language and suggestive content. Artists like Gereson Wabuyu (Gravity Omutuju) and Yasin Mukasa (Lil Pazo) have come under fire for songs such as Enkudi, Dooze, Okwepicha, Enyama, and Omunio, which have been accused of corrupting the moral fabric of Ugandan society. [One rotten mango spoils the whole basket] this warning, signals their resolve to clamp down on content that threatens the nation’s integrity.

The Commission’s action follows a multistakeholder dialogue on December 9, 2024, where voices across the nation raised their concerns. With public outcry echoing through the land, the UCC’s message is clear, that there will be no room for disrespecting the values that bind the Ugandan people together. Broadcasters who ignore this directive will face the wrath of the law, for as the proverb goes, “The nail that sticks out gets hammered.” (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
