As the Premier League’s Boxing Day games approached, both Liverpool’s match against Leeds and Wolves’ match against Watford were called off because to Covid outbreaks.
Both Liverpool’s match against Leeds and Wolves’ match against Watford have been postponed.
The Premier League has confirmed that neither Leeds nor Watford will be able to play at 12.30pm on Sunday.
“Following delay requests from Leeds United and Watford as a result of Covid-19, the Premier League Board met this morning and regretfully agreed to put off the two affected clubs’ Boxing Day fixtures,” the league said in a statement.
“The two matches are Wolverhampton Wanderers v Watford and Liverpool v Leeds United, both of which are scheduled to go off at 12:30 GMT on Sunday.”
“Today, the Board was able to make its choices ahead of Boxing Day, providing certainty to clubs and their supporters.”
“We regret the difficulty and disruption this has caused to those fans’ holiday plans.
“The League recognizes that postponing these two games would upset fans, and appreciates their disappointment at a time of year when people look forward to attending and watching football games.”
Leeds and Watford would not have enough first-team players to play the matches, according to the statement.
Leeds’ training ground has been closed, but Watford’s game against West Ham on December 28 should go ahead.
“Due to the amount of players with Covid-19, injuries, and illness,” the announcement said, “the Board deemed that Leeds United will not be able to fulfill their fixture this weekend.”
“Following consultation with the UK Health Security Agency and the Premier League, the club’s training field has also been closed.”
“After their game against Crystal Palace FC was postponed last Saturday due to a Covid-19 outbreak, Watford FC continues to have an insufficient number of players to field a team.”
“Watford are likely to be available for their match against West Ham United on Tuesday, December 28th, due to players coming out of isolation.”
Both of the postponed Boxing Day games will now be added to an ever-growing list of fixtures that will have to be crammed into an already jam-packed 2022 schedule.
As the Omicron strain spreads, there’s still a chance that more December 26 matches will be canceled.
Currently, seven more Boxing Day games are scheduled, including Manchester City vs. Leicester and Norwich vs. Arsenal.
