The decision came after yet another day of controversy for the social media site, which has been mired in turmoil ever since Musk purchased it in October and fired substantial portions of its workforce, according to a story from The San Francisco Chronicle.

Twitter said on Sunday morning that users would no longer be able to direct followers to their Instagram, Facebook, or Mastodon profiles. Accounts that consistently broke this new regulation would have their access permanently suspended, it stated.

After receiving a lot of backlash from Twitter users, Musk later Sunday tweeted an apology and promised that “major policy changes will be put to a vote moving forward.” By Sunday night, Twitter had removed all of its postings and a notice from its website outlining the new policy on linking to the aforementioned social media platforms.

By then, Musk had also asked Twitter users to vote “yes” or “no” on whether they thought he should stand down from his position as Twitter’s CEO, and he had promised to take into account the results of the poll after a 12-hour period.

“No one wants the position who can genuinely keep Twitter alive,” he tweeted later on Sunday. There isn’t a replacement.

Musk was negative about the chances of hiring a new CEO, stating that they “must like pain a lot.”
