NewYork, USA | BAZZUP | After decades of rationalizing technological progress on the grounds of free speech, the government is now threatening to outlaw social media. According to the US news portal Jacobin, TikTok demonstrates US officials’ true goal: protecting the supremacy of American tech capitalists.

“The growth of the video-sharing app got an additional boost during the pandemic and has since become a central node in global culture as its highly effective algorithm has kept users, particularly young people, constantly coming back for more,” the report added. However, TikTok’s rise has been met with “fear rather than celebration.”

“We’re now waiting to see if the Biden administration will ban the app in the US.” The approach contradicts decades of US technology policy that has favored globalization.

To support their policy approach, authorities in the United States have framed any restriction on internet access as an infringement of people’s right to free expression. However, unfettered speech was never the ultimate goal.

In actuality, the concept of a global, unfiltered internet has been most appealing inasmuch as it assures that American corporations maintain their market supremacy.

“Now that their dominance is being challenged, the supposed defenders of a free and open internet are singing a different tune,” it stated.
