Ugandan forces and FARDC have been engaging with local populations in the DRC in an attempt to close the gap left after the successful commencement of Operation Shuja to clear out ADF fighters.
The UPDF initiated Operation Shuja, a Kiswahili word for “bravery,” earlier this week, in which air force and artillery raids targeted ADF camps in the eastern DRC.
However, militaries from both countries have carried out medical outreach activities and built water point facilities for civilians in Mukakati, Kitibombo, and Kamango over the last two days.
Col James Kasule, speaking at one of the sensitization exercises, indicated that the UPDF deployment in DR Congo was prompted by the ADF’s atrocities against DRC and Ugandan residents.
After removing the ADF from their hideouts, he pledged peace and asked villagers to take ailing people to healthcare clinics.
Col Montana Kyalu, FARDC Intelligence Officer, expressed his delight at the two armies joining forces to put an end to the insurgent situation in the region.
He appealed for calm, adding that both countries require peace.
Locals in North Kivu expressed thanks for the UPDF’s role in rescuing the Democratic Republic of Congo, adding that the ADF had committed numerous atrocities against them.
Maj Peter Mugisa, the Operation Shuja spokesperson, Maj Moses Byamukama, the Political Commissar of the operation, and Capt Andrew Tibeyalirwa, the 111 Brigade Intelligence Officer, accompanied Col James Kasule.
“Our main goal in coming to Congo is to assist our comrades in the FARDC in flushing out ADF terrorists from their safe haven so that both countries can live in peace,” he explained.
Col James Kasule, the Task Force Commander for Operation Shuja, also urged residents to work with the joint security forces and submit intelligence that would lead to the removal of bad elements within communities.
