The United Nations applauds the UPDF’s operation against ADF

The United Nations applauds the UPDF's operation against ADF insurgents in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo has stated that regional collaboration to combat cross-border dangers is welcomed.

After the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) was suspected of carrying out suicide attacks in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, last month, the DR Congo and Ugandan militaries initiated a coordinated operation to “search” for members from the ADF.

The two armies are fighting the rebels on the ground and in the air.

Mathias Gillman, a UN spokesman in DR Congo, said the move was “a legitimate choice and sovereign decision by Congolese authorities” at a press conference in Kinshasa on Wednesday.

“We encourage countries in the region to work together to address a cross-border threat.” Mr. Gillman continued, “Congo made the decision to fight the ADF, and we accept that decision.”

For the past two decades, the UN has had a large troop presence in eastern DR Congo.

Demonstrations shook the towns of Goma and Beni early this year, with residents calling for the UN mission to be ended, claiming it had been “ineffective” un achieving stability.

On December 6, the UN Security Council will vote on whether or not to extend the mission’s mandate.
