Police have reported yet another breakthrough in the investigation into the bombing on a Swift Safari bus on the Kampala-Masaka route, which killed one person and injured another.
Muzafaru Matovu, a suicide bomber, was killed in the bombing on October 25, 2021, while his accomplice, one Yusuf Muwonge, alias Amza Ssendagire, disembarked from the bus before the blast.
On Thursday, security reported Muwonge narrowly escaped a raid at his sister’s home in Kireka Bbira, Nakabugo Parish, Wakiso District.
On Saturday, though, he was apprehended in a separate operation in Kalule Bombo.
On Sunday afternoon, police spokesperson Fred Enanga told the Nile Post, “He was arrested from Kalule, where we had earlier gotten Kanaabe.”
Kanaabe, whose true name is Wampa Muzaifu, is a Boda Boda rider who was recently caught and is currently being held on remand for attempting to assassinate Transport and Works Minister Gen Katumba Wamala.
Muwonge was tracked up to Kanaabe’s house, where he was detained, according to the police spokesperson.
Materials for manufacturing bombs have been seized.
Several goods were discovered from Muwonge’s residence during a Thursday operation by a joint security team at Kireka Bbira in Wakiso district, where he escaped from the rear door of his sister’s house.
“He tossed aside a makeshift electronic gadget that appeared to be ready for planting.” The explosive device was detonated and declared safe by our bomb specialists. An electronic detonator, main charges, ball bearings, nails, batteries, black insulation tapes, and a switch were found in the device. “The hallmarks were identical to the detonated improvised electrical devices” in Ttula Kawempe, Komamboga, and on the Swift safaris bus, according to Enanga.
As with the crackdown of a sleeper ADF terror cell in the country, the development is another another achievement for the government’s security agency.
Some of the objects purportedly seized from Muwonge’s room include wires.
The group was also responsible for the firing on Gen Katumba’s vehicle, which killed his daughter and driver instantaneously, according to a joint Police Crime Intelligence Division, Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence, and JATT operation.
The organization is also accused of planning the bungled attack on mourners in Pader in August after the burial of former deputy IGP Lt Gen Paul Lokech.
