According to Joel Ssenyonyi, a spokeswoman for the National Unity Platform (NUP), the party was not asked to join the People’s Front for Transition (PFT), a new pressure organization led by Dr. Kizza Besigye.
On Thursday, a group of opposition lawmakers established the PFT, claiming it will be a new front to depose President Museveni before 2026.
The Joint Consultative Council is the pressure group’s highest organization, with five representatives from each participating entity.
Members of all political parties are represented, with the exception of the NUP, which is the largest opposition party.
NUP spokesperson Ssenyonyi told NBS TV that they were not invited because the parties signed and launched the Front.
Ssenyonyi, on the other hand, stated that the party has no objections to the new front and that they may be a part of it on purpose, if not in writing.
“Any effort to the struggle is appreciated,” Ssenyonyi added. “We don’t have to be members of the new group in writing, but we should be united in purpose.”
Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, the PFT’s first national deputy chairperson, said at the launch on Thursday that their efforts are aimed at the emancipation of the entire country, and that everyone who shares their vision is welcome.
The new front, according to Lukwago, is not about positions or focusing on elections.
“We’re focused on liberation and nothing else,” Lukwago stated.
FDC president Patrick Oboi Amuriat said now is the time to come together, and he encouraged NUP, as the opposition’s leaders, to join this new’vehicle’ if they want to remain relevant in Ugandan politics.
“I want to talk directly to the NUP,” Amuriat stated, “if they want to make a difference in our politics, now is the time to join together.”
