The NUP has placed its faith in the courts to reverse the Kayunga by-election results.
After what they described as "open daylight thuggery" in the Kayunga LC5 chairperson by-election, the National Unity Platform (NUP) leadership has announced their next steps.
After what they described as “open daylight thuggery” in the Kayunga LC5 chairperson by-election, the National Unity Platform (NUP) leadership has announced their next steps.
Despite the Electoral Commission’s results, NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi claimed that the party had won the by-election (EC).
They will now take the matter to court, according to Ssenyonyi, in order to put the judiciary to the test.
Ssenyonyi made these statements to journalists on Monday at the NUP party headquarters in Kamwokya.
“Our candidate decided to take all of the DR Forms to court to be counted by the court; perhaps they have a better calculator.” We want to put the courts to the test in the same way we put the dictatorship to the test and exposed them,” Ssenyonyi said.
In a close election, Kayunga Returning Officer Jennifer Kyobutungi declared that NRM’s Andrew Muwonge had beaten her nearest rival by 450 votes, with 31,830 votes to Nakweede’s 31,380.
In his remarks, Ssenyonyi called this “foolish,” claiming that even some NRM members are aware that they did not win the by-election.
“Even some NRM members claim they were defeated in Kayunga. This isn’t a NUP issue anymore. In our country, it is a problem. What are your messages to Ugandans? That voting isn’t important any longer?” Ssenyonyi inquired.
According to the NUP spokesman, they did everything to obtain the EC tally sheet as required by law, but EC personnel refused to give them access.
“Byabakama and his thugs have refused to provide us tally sheets because they recognize their actions were rash. We will not make a request. “We’re requesting them,” he continued.
In her remarks, NUP candidate Nakweede thanked the people of Kayunga for voting in large numbers for her, and stated that she is willing to serve her people from wherever if she is not elected.
“Wherever I seat you, that’s where I’ll serve you,” Nakweede remarked.
Nakweede believes that President Museveni of 1986 went to the bush after a rigged election, and she wants him to notify President Museveni of today that the Kayunga by-election was rigged.
“Throughout the electoral process, there were a lot of brutalities.” I’d want to express my heartfelt sympathies to the residents of Kayunga. “Many of us are nursing scars and psychological agony inflicted by this junta,” she continued.
