The Nobel Committee calls on Abiy Ahmed to put a stop to Ethiopia’s war.

The Nobel Committee of Norway has joined international calls on Ethiopia’s prime minister to stop the country’s 14-month civil war.

It added in a statement that Abiy Ahmed, the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner, has a special obligation to bring the bloodshed to an end.

Mr Abiy dispatched soldiers to fight rebels in northern Tigray just a year after receiving the prize for ending a long war with Eritrea.

Millions of people have been forced to flee their homes as a result of the war. The government has been accused of obstructing help, and there have been numerous reports of atrocities on both sides.

Mr Abiy’s spokesperson Billene Seyoum had previously said that the Nobel Peace Prize was not “a shackle for inaction when the country is threatened”.

The calls from the Committee are expected to increase the pressure to find a peaceful resolution for the war.
