The government of Afghanistan has instructed the media to report on the refugees in a responsible manner.
Mulimba told the House that just two Ugandans are now stranded in Afghanistan due to difficulties in gaining entry to Kabul's international airport.
The government has warned the media against irresponsible reporting on the entry of Afghan refugees in Uganda, claiming that such coverage could jeopardize the country’s national security.
State Minister for Regional Affairs John Mulimba, who presented a ministerial statement on Afghanistan refugees and Ugandans still trapped in the conflict zone, said there was a need to maintain the secrecy of Afghanistan refugees since they could be a target of the Taliban administration.
Mulimba told the House that just two Ugandans are now stranded in Afghanistan due to difficulties in gaining entry to Kabul’s international airport.
Without going into detail about the Afghan refugees who have been evacuated from the country, the minister told Parliament that the refugees are only in transit to their eventual destination, and that the US government will cover all costs.
“The government will continue to work with the US embassy in Kampala in the coming future to provide the required assistance to the Afghan evacuees,” he said.
Mulimba warned the media against irresponsible reporting on the issue, claiming that many of the migrants are Taliban government targets.
On the subject of Ugandan traders being ambushed in South Sudan on a regular basis, the minister said his counterpart Okello Oryem is in Juba to try to fix the situation.
