The coup in Guniea is a step backwards, and its leaders should be removed, according to Museveni.
Museveni said, "They should get out, they should be instructed to leave because they are not a solution to the country's problems."
President Museveni has stated that the soldiers who deposed Guinean President Alpha Condé were incorrect and that they should leave the country.
Soldiers commanded by Col Mamady Doumbouya toppled Conde and took power over the weekend.
President Museveni, however, told France 24 in an exclusive interview that the coup leaders should step down.
Museveni said, “They should get out, they should be instructed to leave because they are not a solution to the country’s problems.”
“It’s a pity, and it’s a step backwards. Military coups are of little use; we experienced them in the 1960s, and they were a contributing factor to Africa’s troubles. I oppose the coup, and I reject the concept of coups as a solution.”
It was the fourth coup in West Africa in less than a year. Since August 2020, there have been two military takeovers in Mali and a failed attempt in Niger.
After altering the constitution in March of that year to allow him to run for another term, the 83-year-old president won a disputed third term in October 2020.
Several individuals were killed in conflicts with security forces during protests against Conde’s third term.
Conde was one of the world leaders present during President Museveni’s inauguration earlier this year.
