Tanzania’s finance minister confirmed as vice-president

The Tanzanian parliament has approved the appointment of Finance Minister Philip Isdor Mpango as the country’s vice-president.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan nominated Philip Isdor Mpango to the position of Vice President after she was sworn in as head of state a few weeks ago.

The nomination was announced by Tanzania’s Speaker of Parliament Job Ndugai before the parliamentarians went ahead to approve.

When the Speaker of Parliament announced his nomination, the Member of Parliament (MPs) showed the approval by applauding even before they voted.

The position of Vice President became vacant after President John Magufuli on March 17, 2021.

After his death, his Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in as president. She is mandated then to name her Vice President.

Addressing parliament immediately after his name was submitted, Mpango said he was surprised but also ready to take the responsibility.

Philip Mpango is an economist who has held various senior positions including as a senior economist at World Bank.

He was part of two ministers who were re-appointed by former President Magufuli as he started his second term.

Before working as a Finance Minister in the Magufuli-led government, Mpango served as an economic adviser to former President Jakaya Kikwete.

The minister was last month seen in a viral video coughing during a press conference while paying tribute to senior government officials who had died of suspected Covid-19.
