Sundowns in line for Club World Cup spot
Japan withdrew from the competition last week, citing concerns that it might lead to an increase in Covid-19 infections in a country that had just hosted the Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
Mamelodi Sundowns, the DStv Premiership champions, could be in line to play in a second Fifa Club World Cup in December if South Africa is chosen to replace Japan as the host country.
Japan withdrew from the competition last week, citing concerns that it might lead to an increase in Covid-19 infections in a country that had just hosted the Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
The Club World Cup comprises the league champions of the host country as well as the winners of six continental club competitions.
Danny Jordaan, president of the South African Football Association, told The Associated Press that he will meet with Fifa secretary general Fatma Samoura this week in Lagos, Nigeria, to learn more about what kind of bid South Africa must submit to the world body to host the seven-team men’s tournament.
Fifa has yet to decide on a replacement host, with Saudi Arabia also interested.
