Sugarcane outgrowers associated with Kakira Sugar Works Ltd are enraged by the company’s new harvest strategy.
Kakira Sugar has recruited a contractor to carry sugarcane from the out farmers to the factory as part of the new harvest program.
This has angered already dissatisfied farmers, who believe it will add to the bureaucracy and prevent them access to cane supply licenses.
The plant bosses were attacked by enraged farmers, and it took the intervention of Madhvani security to bring the situation under control.
Farmers claim that they have the capacity to transport their own cane and hence do not require the assistance of a contractor, but Kakira Sugar argues that this is done to improve the quality of sugarcane given to them.
Many farmers in the Busoga sub region are still suffering as a result of sugarcane politics, which has led to many abandoning the crop.
