STOP HIDING BEHIND NRM AND FIX YOUR OWN MESS – OPONDO WARNS OPPOSITION
By Aggrey Baba
In the game of politics, they say “you can’t eat your cake and have it,” and that is exactly what government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo is telling opposition leaders. Appearing on a popular television program, Opondo sharply challenged members of the opposition to stop playing the blame game and take responsibility for their own political fortunes. His remarks came after former Rukungiri Woman MP Ingrid Turinawe and Democratic Alliance’s Mike Mabike blamed the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) for the growing divisions within opposition parties.
Opondo’s outburst followed Turinawe’s claim that the NRM was behind the splits in opposition parties like the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). According to Turinawe, these divisions were part of a larger strategy to weaken the opposition ahead of the next election. But Opondo, ever the political warrior, was quick to remind her that “the bird does not sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.”
“Turinawe failed to secure the FDC ticket in 2020 to run for the woman MP position in Rukungiri. Did the NRM stop her? No! The NRM wasn’t even part of that race,” Opondo pointed out, underlining that it was not the NRM but the choices made by opposition leaders that led to their failure.
He didn’t stop there. Opondo also called out Mike Mabike, who he said had hopped from one political party to another. “Mabike joined NUP, but after failing to secure a ticket, despite being party president for his own SDP. He ran as an independent and lost. Was that also the NRM’s fault?” Opondo asked, adding, [If the stone is too heavy for you to carry, don’t blame the road].
Opondo, using the wisdom of the ages, reminded the opposition that “the ground is leveled for every political actor,” and that in the end, “the decision is made by the voters.” He told them to [stop crying over spilt milk] and focus on their strategies instead of blaming others for their failures.
“Don’t blame the NRM when you fall. You must stand on your own two feet.” His words echoed the proverb, “A man who is not strong enough to stand on his own feet should not blame the ground.”
