Steven Gerrard has dropped a subtle hint on his stance for becoming the Liverpool manager in the future after he was appointed Aston Villa boss.
The former Reds captain was unveiled as Dean Smith’s successor at Villa Park on Thursday, leaving Rangers after three years in charge of the Scottish champions.
Gerrard guided Rangers to their 55th Scottish title last season as they went the campaign unbeaten and prevented Old Firm rivals Celtic from winning 10 titles in a row.
Despite only joining Villa on Thursday, the length of the contract he has agreed hints at a potential move to Liverpool in the future.
Gerrard has agreed a two-and-a-half year deal with the Birmingham-based side which will run through until the summer of 2024.
Coincidentally, this is when Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s current deal is set to expire and he is has previously suggested he will not sign new terms with the club.
Klopp has, however, said he will honour the length of his contract amid past interest from Barcelona and the German national team.
Gerrard made over 700 appearances as a player for Liverpool and began his coaching career at the club in 2017 as he worked as a youth coach and then the manager of the club’s under-18 side.
The new Villa boss will take charge of his first match when they host Brighton in the Premier League next Saturday, while he will return to Anfield for the first time as a manager on December 11.
Gerrard takes over a Villa side sat in 16th place in the league and on a run of five straight league defeats which ultimately cost Smith his job.
