SSEMAKADDE FINALLY GOES AFTER JUDGE MUSA SSEKAANA, VOWING TO CRUSH HIM FOR ANOMALOUS RULINGS

By Mulengera Reporters

It was always a matter of time before Isaac Ssemakadde would use his new platform as the President Uganda Law Society to take on the much-feared Justice Musa Ssekaana who heads the civil division of the High Court.

The two have a history of being belligerent towards each other with Sekaana one time getting angry and causing the duo of Semakadde and Male Mabirizi to get locked up for jail term.

The ULS President is naturally as controversial as Sekaana himself who he now says has a history of using his bench position to “serve the interests of an elitist corrupt establishment.” His latest outburst doesn’t elaborate beyond saying this is public knowledge.

In his Saturday press release, belligerent as all his earlier ones which have made members of the Kenyan bar to wish he was their Law Society President and not Faith Odhiambo who they say is too cautious, Ssemakadde notifies Ssekaana of impending renewal of hostilities. Unlike in the past, when he would battle him as an individual lawyer, protesting his anomalous decisions, Ssemakadde makes it clear that this time round, Ssekaana is going to face the wrath of the entire ULS membership.

Responding to Ssekaana’s judgment granting an injunction to block the extraordinary general meeting, which ULS executive had been organising for 17th December, Semakadde says the decision was anomalous, scandalous and angering but not one that is totally unexpected from Ssekaana’s Court. That the application itself, from which the Sekaana ruling derived, was nothing but “nuisance and democracy-crushing.”

Ssemakadde implies that he wasn’t surprised because Ssekaana has always had a history of delivering decisions which are diversionary and inconsistent with earlier ones by the Court of Appeal whose rulings are supposed to bind the High Court and others below it. That Ssekaana has always been inclined to churn out rulings that protect the status quo, as opposed to upholding the rule of law.

The militant and simultaneously eloquent and fearless ULS President reminds Ssekaana of existence of the radical new bar whose members, he says, are more than prepared to put up fierce resistance against “Ssekaana’s anxieties and those of the puppeteers pulling the strings behind the scenes.”

He also calls upon thousands of lawyers to speak up as opposed to accepting and acquiescing with what he calls “intimidation” coming from Justice Musa Ssekaana’s Court. He says that every decision from Musa Ssekaana’s Court is going to be fiercely resisted for as long as it undermines the ULS’s cherished values of democracy and accountability.
