Boss Solskjaer thinks that the mutual respect between the two icons is shown by Cavani allowing Ronaldo to have his number.

Boss Solskjaer thinks that the mutual respect between the two icons is shown by Cavani allowing Ronaldo to have his number.

It was because of United needing special clearance from the Premier League that Ron wore No. 7 after returning from Juventus late in the transfer window, as the No. 21 that Edinson Cavani wears for Uruguay was assigned to him.

Cavani and Anthony Martial might find themselves on the bench in favor of 36-year-old Ronaldo for Manchester United’s home match against Newcastle tomorrow.

Cavani, who will take No 21, and Ronaldo's Portugal team-mate Bruno Fernandes can't wait to line up alongside the legend

Solskjaer responded: “Edinson was amazing last year, and he has been playing spectacularly this season.

“In showing his respect for Cristiano, Edinson passes up the chance to receive his shirt in exchange for Cristiano showing respect for Edinson.

“They are both incredibly skilled as athletes and people.”

For his whole career, starting with his time in Portugal, Ronaldo has worn the No. 7 shirt.

While he’s worn it before, it has become particularly famous throughout his United tenure, during which legends like George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, and Bryan Robson have also sported it.

Ronaldo’s comeback from injury resulted in all kinds of retail sales records being shattered when United launched No. 7 shirts in his honor.
