Chancellor Still Needed as Makerere Introduces Research Awards and the @100 Book
According to Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, the University Council has started the process of finding a new Chancellor.
This comes after Makerere University Chancellor Prof. Ezra Suruma’s term came to an end.
“That procedure is still in progress. He presided over the 74th Graduation Ceremony on Monday. “Therefore, at this graduation ceremony, I will execute the role of Chancellor as provided for in the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act,” he added.
Having started as a lecturer at Makerere University in 1973, Prof. Suruma has had a lengthy and distinguished career there. After serving in various capacities for the Government of Uganda, including as Minister of Finance, he returned to Serve as Chancellor of Makerere University in 2016.
He has provided excellent service and challenged all of us to lead with conviction.
Prof. Nawangwe stated, “I extend my congratulations to Prof. Suruma for his outstanding service to Makerere University and wish him success in his continued service to our dear nation.”
He expressed his congratulations to the Makerere University staff members who are graduating.
“Thank you for your dedication to Makerere University and for making the wise decision to pursue further education. Likewise, I extend my congratulations to staff members whose spouses and kids are receiving their degrees at the 74th graduation ceremony.
Professor Nawangwe praised the graduates who balanced leadership and academics while serving as class representatives at the college and school levels for the Makerere University Students’ Guild.
Research Excellence Awards of the Vice Chancellor 2023
He also announced the inaugural Makerere University Vice Chancellor’s Research Excellence Awards, in recognition of outstanding performers in research and publication.
“I am happy to report that as a result of the various partnerships forged over time, our research output in terms of innovations and publications is on the increase.”
Based on the Scorpus database’s maximum number of publications between 2017 and 2023, Professor Rhoda Wanyenze and Professor Moses Robert Kamya are the Best Overall Male and Female Researchers, respectively.
During the specified era, Prof. Rhoda Wanyenze has 153 publications, and Prof. Moses Robert Kamya has 271 articles.
“I extend my congratulations to the five researchers who have been named the finest researchers from each of the ten (10) colleges and the Makerere University Library. The Graduation Booklet and Mak News Magazine have both produced a comprehensive list of the top researchers.
Release of the book Makerere University @100
The book, Makerere’s Century of Service to East Africa and Beyond: 1922–2022, which recounts the remarkable tale of a university serving Uganda, East Africa, and the world, was released, he added.
