Saudi Arabia has announced a number of programs aimed at combating climate change.

The first Middle East Green Initiative Summit was held in Riyadh, with Saudi Arabia promising to implement a number of programs to combat environmental degradation and climate change.

A number of Middle Eastern and African dignitaries, as well as international environmental and climate change officials, attended the meeting.

During the summit, leaders and guests saw the first set of programs and projects launched by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, all of which aim to help the Middle East Green Initiative achieve its lofty aims.

The objectives are to support regional efforts and cooperation to reduce carbon emissions and remove them through nature-based and adaptation solutions by more than 10% of current global contributions, and to plant (50) billion trees in the region, achieving 5% of the global target for afforestation and representing the world’s largest tree-planting program.

Saudi Arabia announced during the summit that it will establish an international cooperation platform to implement the concepts of circular carbon economy, establish a regional centre for climate change, establish a regional complex for carbon capture, use, and storage, and establish a regional centre for early warning of storms to help reduce the associated health risks resulting from the Middle East Green Initiative.

“It will also establish a regional center for sustainable development of fisheries to contribute to raising marine biodiversity and reducing emissions in the fisheries sector by roughly 15%,” according to a statement from the kingdom. “It will also establish a regional program for cloud seeding to contribute to raising precipitation levels by nearly 20%,” it added.

These centers and initiatives will play a key role in developing the infrastructure required to safeguard the environment, cut emissions, and improve regional coordination.

In addition, the Kingdom will seek to build a worldwide initiative to help provide clean fuel solutions to feed the world’s more than (750) million people, as well as a fund to invest in circular carbon economy innovations in the region.

The overall investment in these two initiatives is estimated to be around 39 billion Riyals, with the Kingdom contributing roughly 15% of the funding.

In addition, the Kingdom announced the formation of the Green Initiative Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the summit and improving collaboration.

The leaders agreed on the significance of concerted action to build a regional roadmap and framework to face these difficulties, as well as accomplishing the Middle East Green Initiative’s objectives, as a result of their shared responsibilities in facing common environmental challenges.

The leaders expressed their gratitude for the Kingdom’s initiatives and efforts in the field of environment and climate change, and thanked His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for his leadership of these efforts and his generous invitation of leaders and officials to this summit. They also agreed to form joint working groups and hold the summit on a regular basis to develop implementation plans to achieve the goals of the initiatives.
