An Istanbul agreement to resume grain shipments was signed

Separate agreements were struck by Russia and Ukraine on Friday in Istanbul with Turkey and the UN to resume grain shipments from Ukrainian ports to foreign markets via the Black Sea.

Sergei Shoigu, the Russian defense minister, initially signed the agreement with Antonio Guterres, the UN secretary general, and Hulusi Akar, the Turkish counterpart. Oleksandr Kubrakov, the Ukrainian minister of infrastructure, then signed the agreement with the other two parties.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, also attended the ceremony.

An agreement on the fundamentals of the shipment procedure over the Black Sea was reached last week during the first round of negotiations between military delegates from Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, and the United Nations. The parties also decided to set up a coordination hub in Istanbul to manage and oversee the shipping procedure.

The agreement will enable the shipping of about 20 million tons of grain waiting at Ukrainian ports to the rest of the world via the Black Sea, according to the government-run Anadolu agency.
