On Monday, clashes occurred between enraged teenagers and local police in Goma, the capital of North Kivu, resulting in multiple injuries and the death of a police officer.

They largely blocked traffic by erecting barricades on multiple roads.

“We have a good army and police force in our country, but we don’t understand why Rwandans are coming to secure us here in our country.” “Since Mobutu has been president of this country, he has never sold it,” a protester stated. “But now, Tshisekedi has signed deals with Rwanda for its police to come here, which we oppose.”

“For a long time, we, the Congolese, have been suffering. Another protester stated, “We are demonstrating to say no to the arrival of Rwandan police in our country; we refuse because we have our own police force.”

The police used tear gas canisters and live bullets to disperse the demonstrators. According to preliminary numbers, one police officer and another protester were murdered, with scores more injured.

On Saturday, the Congolese national police’s general commissioner disputed the allegation, saying that no external police would be sent to Goma. This allegation was deemed false by him.
