Douglas Kaweesi, a 28-year-old Kazinga Abaita ababiri native, drowned after requesting his 10-year-old nephew to accompany him to the lakeshore for swimming, according to police.
Before drowning, the dead was believed to have been overwhelmed by the high waves.
According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, a thorough search was performed the next day with the assistance of local fishermen, and the victim’s body was recovered.
“The case is now being investigated to determine who is to blame for the beach’s opening, as it is a prohibited location under Ministry of Health guidelines on Covid-19,” he stated.
This, he stated, includes the territorial commanders in the area, who he said acted in an unprofessional manner.
He stated that the public should be aware that all beaches are still restricted, and that they should follow the rules to the letter.
