The United States believes the balloon was used for spying, contradicting China’s claim that it was a civilian aircraft used for meteorological purposes.
As the balloon controversy grew in the last week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken canceled a trip to China.
“We successfully brought it down, and I’d like to thank our aviators who accomplished it,” President Joe Biden is quoted as saying.
The President stated that he issued an order to deflate the balloon on Wednesday, and that the Pentagon waited until it could be done over open sea to protect civilians.
