As the first Native American to assume the office of treasurer of the United States, Marilynn Malerba, chief of the Mohegan Tribe, was appointed by U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday.

According to a White House statement, the treasurer of the United States personally manages the U.S. Mint, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and serves as a crucial point of contact for the Federal Reserve.

According to the announcement, Malerba will also act as a senior advisor to the secretary of the Treasury in the fields of community development and public involvement.

In 2010, Malerba was elected as the Mohegan Tribe’s 18th chief, becoming the group’s first female leader in the modern era. The Treasury Department claims that she had previously been a part of the Treasury Tribal Advisory Committee.

A tribe leader and Native woman’s signature will soon appear on the country’s money for the first time in American history thanks to Malerba’s nomination as treasurer of the United States, the department added.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen described the choice as “historic,” adding that Malerba’s leadership and background “will reinforce our commitment to help expand economic opportunities for all indigenous people.”

As we collaborate to build an equitable and just society, Malerba said, “I am both honored and humbled by Secretary Yellen’s and the Biden administration’s dedication to ensure that all perspectives are heard by Treasury.
