Only trucks carrying locally manufactured goods to present e-receipts in Kikuubo, says URA

The Kikuubo market in Kampala’s central business district will only accept trucks carrying locally made items, according to new standards established by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) for the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System (EFRIS).

The Uganda Revenue Authority’s Commissioner General, John R. Musinguzi, gave this instruction to regional manufacturers and suppliers during a meeting with Kikuubo businessmen in Kampala.

The former procedure in which URA inspected every shop has been replaced by this new regulation.

“We have successfully resolved a problem with EFRIS enforcement in Kikuubo Market today. According to Musinguzi, only suppliers and manufacturers planning to join the Kikuubo market will need to present proof of e-receipts.

He also added that URA cannot demand e-receipts from everyone since not all are traders

According to him, URA would use this time to innovate and educate traders about taxes in order to get them ready to accept the system.

We’re going to begin taking EFRIS seriously. Everybody with a smartphone will use the EFRIS mobile application that we have also developed. We are now able to enroll everyone on EFRIS after sufficient sensitization, he continued.

But Musinguzi urged traders who had already signed up for EFRIS to keep using the platform.

“We must continue where you are, as you have already made progress. Although EFRIS has not yet taken off in Uganda, it is appropriate for Kikuubo. EFRIS is operating in every nation we have visited. both large and tiny stores. We encourage you to try using it with an open mind. There won’t be any guesswork with EFRIS because its evaluation is grounded in the facts, he stressed.

Through John Kabanda, President of the New Generation Kampala dealers’ Association, the traders consented to utilize the main gate for the purpose of complying with tax laws. They were grateful to URA for hearing them out and reaching a mutually agreeable resolution.

“I am grateful that the @URA_CG anticipated business trends and agreed to cooperate with common traders. Kabanda said, “He made a very good decision that will benefit businesses.”

Musinguzi pledged to return to the hub in November of this year with local MPs and the leadership of the Kampala Capital City Authority in order to find a long-term solution for Kikuubo.
