President Joe Biden has announced that he will speak to the nation on Tuesday about the United States’ final withdrawal from Afghanistan after 20 years of fighting the Taliban.
“I will address the American people tomorrow afternoon on my decision not to extend our commitment in Afghanistan beyond August 31,” he said in a statement released shortly after the Pentagon confirmed the last US military plane had left Kabul. According to the White House, Biden’s remarks will begin at 1:30 p.m. (1730 GMT).

Biden praised the military for withdrawing the last US soldiers, diplomats, and nearly all Americans, as well as tens of thousands of Afghan allies who served for or fought alongside international forces in the war, in his speech.

In the previous 17 days, Biden stated, the military carried out the largest airlift in US history, rescuing over 120,000 US people, allies’ nationalities, and Afghan partners.
The international community expects the Taliban to offer greater freedom of movement in the future, according to the US president. The Taliban has made assurances concerning safe passage, and the international community will hold them to their word.
The goal, according to the US president, was to repair the airport so that “those who wish to leave can continue to leave, and humanitarian supplies can be delivered to the people of Afghanistan.”

According to US officials, an unknown number of Americans remain in Afghanistan, including many dual nationals who did not desire to leave and many Afghans who wanted to leave but were prevented to board US flights.
Biden reaffirmed assurances from US and international officials that the Taliban had agreed to allow such parties to continue departing now that they have complete control of Kabul, including its airport.
