The High Court in Masaka has scheduled a hearing for Monday, October 285 to rule on a motion by opposition MPs Allan Ssewayana and Muhammad Ssegirinya to be released on bail.
The two legislators accused of murder, attempted murder, and terrorism in the recent series of murders in Masaka appeared before Masaka High Court judge Lawrence Tweyanze via a video link from Kigo Prison in Wakiso district.
However, the hearing was interrupted on multiple occasions due to a weak internet connection, but it was later restored.
The two legislators informed court through their lawyers, lead by Erias Lukwago, that while it is their right to be released on bond, they also suffer from chronic illnesses and injuries acquired during their re-arrest by security.
“The applicants have no criminal record, are not criminals, and have never been convicted of any criminal offense or have a history of bail jumping,” Lukwago added.
He provided several sureties, including Derrick Nyeko (Makindye East), Geoffrey Kayemba (Bukomansimbi South), Joseph Ssewungu (Kalungu West), Moses Kasibante, Kevin Namakula, and Thomas Bagonza, among others.
According to the lawyer, the two legislators are law-abiding citizens who will appear in court when summoned.
Richard Birivumbuka, the senior Resident State Attorney, objected to the bail application, claiming that releasing the two parliamentarians would jeopardize police investigations.
Justice Tweyanze, on the other hand, stated that he would be able to rule on the bail application on Monday.
