Nigeria to lift Twitter ban soon
Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has indicated that the Twitter ban will soon be lifted.
In an interview with a State Assembly reporter on Wednesday, Mohammed said the ban could be lifted soon.
“We thank Nigerians for their patience. I want to assure you that we have made great progress. We have met with Twitter both physically and in writing. In fact, we are almost there,” he said.
On June 4 of this year, the Nigerian government suspended access to the Weibo platform indefinitely. The indefinite ban came after Twitter deleted a tweet from President Muhammadu Buhari, which appeared to threaten some citizens.
Negotiations between Twitter and the Nigerian government began after the ban was lifted. According to Muhammad, they appear to have made positive progress in the negotiations.
Before negotiations began, Lai Mohammed revealed that some of the conditions for lifting the ban include registering Twitter as a company in Nigeria and appointing a national representative as a liaison between the company and the federal government.
At the same time, a Twitter spokesperson confirmed to the Nigerian People’s Bulletin that they were holding talks with the Nigerian government. However, no agreement has been reached yet.
In an e-mail statement purportedly sent to the People’s Bulletin, a Twitter spokesperson said: “We recently met with the Nigerian government to discuss the reasons why Twitter was blocked and how to resolve the matter. Our goal is to help everyone in Nigeria. Individuals chart a path to restore Twitter. ”
” We look forward to ongoing discussions with the Nigerian government and see that the service will resume soon,” the spokesperson added.
