Washington, USA | BAZZUP |At the ongoing US-Africa Leaders’ Summit, President Yoweri Museveni has received praise for his effective response to the COVID-19 epidemic and the Ebola outbreak in Uganda.
At the Partnering for Sustainable Health session on Tuesday at the Washington Convention Center with the topic “Building Resilience for Healthy People, Healthy Countries,” President Museveni received praise from his Botswanan counterpart, Mokgweetsi Masisi.
President Museveni emphasized the contribution of Ugandan scientists during the COVID-19 outbreak in his speech, stating that they combined traditional and modern medicine to save Ugandans and those in surrounding nations.
The President walked from his hotel room to the event location and said, “During the pandemic, Prof Patrick Ogwang crossmatched an ancient anti-viral plant product that the people in the North Eastern part of Uganda have been using since time immemorial against measles, which is caused by the virus Rubeola.
At the recent US-Africa Summit, I spoke at the conference on Sustainable Health Cooperation & Health Security. I focused on the two-strategy approach to health care: preventive measures on the one hand, and curative treatments on the other.
According to Museveni, COVID-19, which devastated the rest of the world, has been contained in Uganda. He also stated that the nation is trying to develop all types of vaccines required for people and cattle. He referred to a Ugandan-developed anti-tick vaccination.
In order for Uganda to receive a fair portion of global pharmaceutical output, President Museveni also called for increased cooperation between Uganda and the US, particularly in the fields of medicines and vaccines. He claimed that because of the flora present on the continent, Uganda and Africa are better suited to create various medications.
Gen. Museveni added that the agreement would significantly contribute to the availability of less expensive drugs and vaccinations.
There are two areas where we are acting independently but would appreciate collaboration if it were possible. This is found in medications and vaccinations. The current situation, where Africa only contributes USD 16 billion to the $1.42 trillion global pharmaceutical manufacturing, is incorrect, the man stated.
The President listed eight (8) healthcare and promotion initiatives that could assist Uganda in eradicating 75% of the potential diseases that might afflict its citizens.

These include nutrition through education and sensitization, hygiene (hand washing and correct waste disposal), access to safe water through gravity-flow systems and boreholes, immunization, and the prevention of malaria through the use of larvicides and the drainage of stagnant water.
President Museveni met separately with Kulijit Ghata-Aura, President of Boeing Middle East, Turkey and Africa (META), and his entourage to talk about the Ugandan aviation sector.
The International Monetary Fund’s Director for Africa Department, Abebe Aemro Selassie, also met with the president. The two talked about the economy.
