Museveni: Every Commodity That Meets Rules of Origin Should Be Sold Freely in East Africa

According to President Yoweri Museveni, any good that complies with the laws governing origin should be freely traded throughout East Africa.

During a meeting with Peter Mathuki, the secretary general of the East African Community, he made the remarks today at State House Entebbe.

“…The laws of the origin must be followed. Products created in East Africa should be free to reach the market as long as they are made there.

In the future, East Africa will have a very robust economy that imports fewer goods from outside the region, according to President Museveni.

He noted that once the economies are strong, imports won’t be necessary.

Mr. Mathuki praised the President in his remarks for the ongoing effort he has put into the community.

He declared that the region’s trade restrictions will all be lifted by the East African Community Secretariat.

Mr. Mathuki suggested that the Community set up a committee to settle all trade issues between the participating nations.

Additionally, he briefed President Museveni on the future of the East African Monetary Union and the achievements made thus far.

The Secretary General also gave the President an update on the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s peace process, stating that a fund needed to be established to aid the peace process in the country of East Africa.

Gen. Museveni, on the other hand, committed Uganda to making a contribution to the fund.
