Mikel Arteta Defends Bukayo Saka Selection with ‘Perfectly Fine’ Update on Arsenal Star

Mikel Arteta has provided an update on Bukayo Saka’s injury after the Arsenal winger was substituted during the team’s 2-1 defeat against Lens. Arteta defended Saka’s selection and mentioned that the player was “perfectly fine” before the match.

Saka has been substituted in three consecutive matches, including games against Tottenham and Bournemouth in the Premier League. Despite starting and assisting Gabriel Jesus’ goal, Saka was replaced in the 34th minute by Fabio Viera. Arteta confirmed in his post-match interview that Saka “felt something specific” and “wasn’t comfortable to continue,” seemingly holding his thigh as he left the pitch.

Arteta explained that Saka had a knock from the 4-0 win over Bournemouth, but he was deemed fit to start against Lens after training on Monday. However, he felt uncomfortable during the match after attempting a backheel and had to be substituted.

The injury setback raises concerns for Arsenal ahead of their upcoming match against Manchester City on Sunday. Arsenal is currently unbeaten in the Premier League and sits third in the table.

Arteta also mentioned that he doesn’t know the extent of Saka’s injury and whether he will be available for the weekend’s game. Saka had been a regular starter for Arsenal this season, featuring in eight of their nine competitive matches.

Despite the defeat against Lens, Arteta didn’t attribute it to the travel issues caused by stormy conditions at Luton Airport. He emphasized that there are no excuses and that Arsenal was in control of the game until they conceded two goals. Arteta acknowledged that the team needs to improve in both attacking and defensive areas.
